*Saban’s Power Rangers movie spoilers below*
Saban’s Power Rangers movie is finally in theaters – and viewers will immediately notice the absence of one very popular Power Ranger: Tommy Oliver, the Green Ranger. The film spends its time introducing and empowering the original five Power Rangers, as it should, but does leave fans with a tease of a future Green Ranger in its post-credits scene.
In the scene, Angel Grove High’s detention teacher is seen taking attendance, and this time calls out a new student – Tommy Oliver. Viewers don’t get to see Tommy, but rather just an empty desk with a green jacket and some school textbooks left behind.
So who exactly is Tommy? In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Director Dean Israelite explains that the newest character will be loaded with attitude.
“We thought about the fact that the movie is an updated version of the show, which was teenagers with attitude, so if you think these teenagers have attitude, wait ’til you see Tommy. He brings it in bucketloads. That’s what this scene is trying to hint at.”
According to Israelite, the plan was always to tease audiences with Tommy in a post-credits scene, but the original idea was to do so in the school cafeteria, not detention.
“Yes [the original plan] was [always to tease Tommy]. We had shot, actually, a different tease for Tommy that wasn’t working out as well, and when we did a bit of additional photography, we put this version in which we think plays much better. [The original version] took place in the cafeteria and it just wasn’t as cool or dynamic, but it was basically the same thing. This felt much more organic to what was going on at the end of the movie. It was a part of that end scene in detention with all the other kids, so we just added it on to that. We shot it in four hours.”
So is a sequel confirmed to focus around Tommy and the origin of his Green Ranger powers? Israelite was less committal on revealing that just yet.
“Obviously, the next generation [of films in the franchise] would hopefully include what we’re teasing at the end of this film, because I think that’s something that fans are really going to enjoy. Even for non-fans, he would be an incredible character to bring into this ensemble, and of course you want to keep going.”
Fans can only hope that Lionsgate will green light a potential sequel based on the opening weekend’s box office results.
For now, be sure to check out Saban’s Power Rangers movie in theaters, and stay with Power Rangers NOW for all the latest updates.
So Tommy is going to be an asshole in the next movie at first then?
Has to be, which will make him even more ruthless as the Green Ranger once Rita turns him evil.
I know Naomi Scott and Becky g already said this but I agree with them that it could be amazing for Tommy to be a woman, and have 3 boys and 3 girls. The dynamic would be really good and it would bring another badass female character into the universe
I CANT WAIT FOR TOMMY OLIVER THE GREEN RANGER IN THE NEXT POWER RANGERS MOVIE
As long as he’s a he I’m happy
Tommy needs to be true to the films just like he was.in the other ones y don’t they have Tommy as the whight ranger and a girl as a green ranger that would be nice
Oh yeah..Tommy’s back. But if they make Tommy a girl, I can assure that the sequel will not be successful BECAUSE I believe many of the power rangers fan would hate it
they could split the character into two and have it be brother and sister, one is the white ranger while the other is the green ranger
