As fans anxiously await potential confirmation on a sequel to Saban’s Power Rangers movie, many have already begun speculating on the direction a second film may go in.
While the debut of Tommy Oliver and the Green Ranger saga appears to be an obvious next step, who would play the film’s primary antagonist? Would Elizabeth Banks return as Rita Repulsa or would we see the debut of the Power Rangers’ iconic arch-nemesis, Lord Zedd?
In an interview with ComicBook.com, Director Dean Israelite hinted that Lord Zedd would be “the obvious choice”, adding that we could see the Galactic Overlord as soon as the next Power Rangers movie.
“Well Lord Zedd is the obvious choice, I think, in a good way…and so I think definitely it would all expanding into the next volume I definitely think have to feature Lord Zedd. I mean that’s not set in stone but I think that’s the obvious, sort of, next step to it.” – Director Dean Israelite in an interview with ComicBook.com.
Israelite went on to add that Lord Zedd almost found his way into the franchise’s first movie, but was ultimately cut to allow more time for Elizabeth Banks to shine as Rita Repulsa.
“Ya know, there was a time when we were talking about Lord Zedd being in this movie. And it just felt like we didn’t have the real estate for it and I didn’t want to dilute our villains. So we kind of went all in on Rita.” – Director Dean Israelite in an interview with ComicBook.com.
Fans will have to stay tuned to see if Lionsgate and Haim Saban can come to an agreement on another Power Rangers film in order to see what exactly Israelite may draw up for Lord Zedd.
