This review for Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #27 from BOOM! Studios, the continuation to Shattered Grid, is SPOILER-FREE. The issue goes on sale May 16, 2018.
Power Rangers: SHATTERED GRID nails it again.
It’s become an all too familiar phrase as writer Kyle Higgins continues to find ways to make this Power Rangers story get better, and better, and better. Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #27 offers so much to love, including another final page that sows together some of your guaranteed favorite characters from across the franchise’s 25-year legacy.
Let’s start with one of the best parts of the issue, which is seeing new characters make an immediate impact. Lauren, the Red Samurai Ranger, debuted in the last issue and doesn’t take long to begin leaving her mark on the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers team. In fact, Lauren takes center stage in one of the book’s most appealing scenes which sees a couple of heroes bonding over their inspiring journeys to become Red Rangers.
It’s a scene that’s touching, heart warming, and partially mind blowing, because as Kyle Higgins stated before – who could have ever imagined the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers interacting with characters like Lauren Shiba and Doctor K? (Full quote in our Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #26 interview here.) That’s what makes Power Rangers: SHATTERED GRID so special. It’s creating moments you’ll never find anywhere else.
Speaking of Doctor K, the iconic mentor from Power Rangers RPM makes her entrance as evidenced by the issue’s main cover (seen below). Doctor K figures to be a pivotal part of the story moving forward, and if there’s one thing we all know, it’s that Doctor K never fails to create a moment you’ll always remember.
But the issue also succeeds at weaving in some of the comic series’ side characters you may have forgotten, such as Skull. The lovable duo of Bulk and Skull have almost become lost in the grand spectacle of seeing Rangers unite, but Eugene “Skull” Skullovitch re-emerges in a surprising way, proving that he’ll be an important part of the story moving forward. Fans who enjoyed seeing Bulk and Skull develop on the Power Rangers TV show will love seeing their favorite comedic duo take a further step in proving that anyone can be a hero.
With so many characters to balance and so many action items to complete, it can only mean one thing: our Mighty Morphin Power Rangers are splitting up. And that’s a good thing, as the story begins to bounce around multiple dimensions much like the fast-paced action of Avengers: Infinity War.
Over on the dark side, Lord Drakkon doesn’t disappoint as he debuts another new look. Tommy Oliver’s sinister counterpart continues his quest to steal and accrue Morphers, and after conquering the Power Rangers Samurai, he begins to take his quest to…literally every other Power Rangers team.
And while Lauren Shiba gets her fair share of deep bonding moments, so does Lord Drakkon with his nurturing sidekick, Finster 5. You’ll get more out of this issue if you read the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers 2018 Annual #1 beforehand. Not only does that book tell incredible side stories you’ll love from start to finish, but it ties nicely into the little details you’ll pick up in this issue.
When we spoke with Kyle Higgins last month (recap here), he guaranteed this issue would treat readers to “one of the greatest double-page spreads”. Kyle Higgins has yet to tell a lie.
If you wanted to see the Lost Galaxy Rangers on the same page as the Dino Thunder Rangers and the Jungle Fury Rangers and the Lightspeed Rescue Rangers and more, you’re coming to the right place. Artist Daniele Di Nicuolo pulls off a scene so beautiful, you’ll want it framed on your bedroom wall. Well, minus the fact that you might see your favorite Ranger on the wrong side of a choke slam from Lord Drakkon.
Power Rangers: SHATTERED GRID continues to amaze as BOOM! Studios combines spectacular storytelling, with lively colors, with breathtaking artwork in an issue packed with juicy elements from the entire 25-year timeline of Power Rangers.
But really, while fans have so anxiously waited for Power Rangers: SHATTERED GRID to bring together their favorite Power Rangers, that final page reminds you that maybe there was something we all forgot…

FINAL SCORE: 9/10
BOOM! Studios hits another homerun as Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #27 highlights touching personal moments between Power Rangers of the 20th and 21st centuries, while delighting readers to new characters and a final page for the ages.
I am so pumped for this
My guess for the last page is the Ranger Slayer shows up.
My guess is the clone green ranger Tom. He exists in some demension some where. Maybe he is how we get Tommy back for the main team.
Is Hasbro going to end this comic book? We need to know
I can’t wait to see drakkons new look.
