Today, fans can check out the first look at Goldar in Lionsgate’s upcoming 2017 Power Rangers movie!
Goldar was best known as Rita Repulsa’s iconic general in the Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers TV show. A warrior ape with superior strength and swordsman skills, Goldar became a fan-favorite villain for his vicious battles with the Power Rangers.
And while the Power Rangers movie has featured a number of deviations in character designs, the film’s version of Goldar appears to sport a number of similarities. He still wields his robust sword into battle, as well as another club-type weapon. He’s also retained his wings and headpiece that were recognizable from the TV show.
But the infamous villain also appears to display a number of differences. For one, he’s no longer a warrior ape but instead a massive creature dripping from head to toe in gold. Does Rita Repulsa create him from pure gold, as rumors have suggested? He also exhibits two flaps on his chest that appear to open up, but it remains possible this is a feature exclusive to the toy.
Goldar’s most likely role in the upcoming Power Rangers movie will be to battle the team’s larger-than-life Megazord, the humanoid structure built when each Ranger combines their robotic dinosaur Zord together. Bandai’s first Power Rangers movie toy commercial (seen here) depicts a Goldar vs. Megazord duel, and sounds from the already released Interactive Megazord toy lend credence to the same idea.
Goldar has yet to have his voice actor announced (if the character even has a voice), but his inclusion in the film was first confirmed at a New York Comic-Con panel in October by director Dean Israelite.
The Power Rangers movie follows five ordinary teens who must become something extraordinary when they learn that their small town of Angel Grove – and the world- is on the verge of being obliterated by an alien threat. Chosen by destiny, our heroes quickly discover they are the only ones who can save the planet. But to do so, they will have to overcome their real-life issues and before it’s too late, band together as the Power Rangers.
